Rest day at Tuxer-Joch Haus (2313m)
Today is rest day, to acclimate my body and get back on track. And I really do nothing. I planned to go down a bit, just below the hut, to where the marmots were running around yesterday, but my heavy breathing together with an unappealing drizzle keeps me in the hut.
It’s strange being in a hut during the day, as huts are usually conveyor belts of people- intake at 3pm, showers, dinner, lights out at 10, breakfast and on you go. I find a sheltered corner and try to keep out of the way of the hard working hut staff. At 11 the hut manager approaches me, cleaning is done, she says, you can go ahead to the room, just don’t tell anyone else, she almost winks at me. I would, very much, like to rest, in spite of doing nothing all day. I take a nap, go for a hike around the lake, get winded, and come back. I do have my appetite back, which is something. But now I have tomorrow to think about - the main route should take me to the Olpererhut, on what is defined as a challenging day. The alternative is an easier day to the Gerarehut. I check the online reservation system and find, to my delight, that Olpererhut is full for tomorrow, while Gerarehut has one last bed available. This allows me to feel better with my choice of a lighter day tomorrow. So depending on how I’ll sleep tomorrow, it’s off to Gerarehut tomorrow.
